Savings Bond Working Group
D2D is hosting a working group--the Savings Bond Working Group--whose members come from grassroots tax preparation organizations, policy groups, industry partners and government officials, to help encourage saving by all Americans--but particularly low and moderate income families--using U. S. Savings Bonds at tax time. A four-year pilot demonstrated the appeal of U. S. Savings Bonds as an easy, convenient means of saving at a time when many taxpayers have sizeable tax refunds.
On Saturday, September 5, 2009, President Obama announced in his weekly address that taxfilers receiving refunds would now be able to purchase U.S. Savings Bonds by checking a box on the tax form. The Savings Bond Working Group applauds the President's action and is working nationally to raise awareness of the new option to buy Savings Bonds at tax time.
Tax Season 2009 ended on April 15, and the very encouraging results of the TS09 Savings Bond Pilot Project are now available. Yes We Can: Inclusive Saving at Tax Time details the 2009 season and features some of its highlights, along with data and analysis from the previous two years of the pilot.
